Project #1 - Sound Calendar
Graphically represent the sounds below. In each case, carefully consider the character of the sound in terms of its tempo, volume, duration, context and color. Consider working abstractly, metaphorically, or typographically. There are no limitations on the color or media.
Analysis:
Although literal problem solving has its place in design, a graphic vocabulary must be expanded beyond this simple narrative voice. The intent of Sound Problem is to push a designer past the initial predictable response of literalism. It is important to investigate other avenues of problem solving and more sophisticated approaches. An extensive graphic design vocabulary is better equipped to solve complex problems using metaphor, symbolism, abstraction, or typography: the conditions of this problem encourages a designer in this direction.
Note:
Each Solution has the support of a copy line, which gives the viewer a reference point for understanding segments of the assignment. The relationship between copy and image becomes an integral part of each solution as the two elements play off one another to capture the viewer’s attention. Any necessary information not supplied by the copy or graphics is contributed by the viewer comprehending the piece. Encouraging this relationship between viewer and communication piece is a primary objective of the sound problem.
