FINAL PROJECT
Metamorphosis
PART 1: Generating Ideas and Source Material | Due Wed 11-18
In your journal, complete the following tasks
1) Define metamorphosis. Look the word up in several sources to detect variation in the definitions. What is the history, or etymology of this word?
2) Using a thesaurus, look up the word metamorphosis and generate a word list of first, synonyms and second, antonyms.
3) Conduct a search for items that undergo a type of transformation or metamorphosis. Draw from all disciplines: literature (fictional characters, etc.), zoology, chemistry, astronomy, geology, philosophy, religion, history, art, etc. SUGGESTION: Use the Internet to aid your research. Make another list in your notebook of these items.
PART 2: Forming the concept | Due Wed 11-18
THE VISUAL PROBLEM: You are to create a series 8 of digital images that communicate your ideas and feelings about the notion of metamorphosis. In this project, you are NOT illustrating an instance of metamorphosis. Rather, you are focusing on an idea or feeling that your research has generated. ( Literal interpretations will not be accepted)
Sample idea:
- Explore the concept of metamorphosis by investigating the transformation of an abstract drawing. Begin by constructing a "foil," a piece that has nothing to do with metamorphosis (consult your antonym list for ideas). Create a single piece that communicates stillness, stasis, and immobility. Then, gradually alter the piece, making it lively and more dynamic. Save each alteration. You will end up with a sequence of images.
Part 3: Write a 1-2 Page proposal |Due Wed 11-18
\This abstract should be a focused discussion of what your piece will consist of and your ideas behind it. The following list should help you focus your thoughts. You don’t have to have an answer to these questions right away. However, they will help you focus and gather your sources.
- Who is the audience?
- Why are you making this piece?
- What do you hope to communicate?
- What is your attitude?
- Are you being critical, funny, serious, educational, personal...?
- What is the concept or idea that ties all the parts together?
- Where are you going to get your materials?
- Include a possible working title.
- Is the piece narrative or non-narrative?
- what happens when one navigates through your imagery?
Collect visual examples that will help explain your intention
Prepare presentation and bring visual examples. Be prepared to discuss your concept, media, materials and process.
Part 4: Creating the images
This assignment will display your skills in Photoshop and or Illustrator.. All imagery MUST BE ORIGINAL. You can your drawings, photography, video stills, scans of your work...but it MUST be yours! Use the skills you have learned to create unique imagery. Planning and organization key!
Part 5: HTML
Importing images into Dreamweaver and creating linked pages for viewing. All projects will be posted on the Scotland server. If your Cortland email is not working or has never been established. Make sure you take care of that asap. (Academic Computing) x2500 on campus.
Final Requirements:
- Written Proposal
- Produce 8 images (1024x768) for critique. ALL IMAGES MUST BE THE SAME SIZE. All images should "relate" in that each attempts to solve the "conception" problem in a similar way. Showing images as a series.
- Create a Title Page in Dreamweaver and successfully present your final online.
- Save images in 2 formats. Originals should be saved as .psd OR .ai files. Also save these images as .jpg files to be posted on your website. These 8 images will be linked in order to click through the metamorphosis.
- WWW_yourname folder on the server that contains all files( working files, .jpgs, html)
Grading Criteria:
- Cleaver use and unique interpretation of the given problem.
- Interesting use of color, space, movement, mood, composition and communication of metamorphoses.
- Technical proficiency
- Title Page
- Sophisticated imagery
- Images successfully displayed on through the use if html
