As a fine artist, Barnaby's work explores fairytales, games and childood narrative in innovative, interactive ways by combining video, animation and photography with new media technology. Her work has been exhibited in State of The Arts: Digital Media, Miramax: Imagine It Series, SIGGRAPH, and The Third Annual New York Digital Salon.

Creative Statement:
As a digital artist, I have worked in the arenas of the applied and fine arts.  Graphics, video, interactivity, animation, multimedia and web interfaces are what I love and find continually engaging.  Throughout my career, I choose my work on a project–to–project basis.

For me, industry work informs the conceptual work and conceptual work adds strength to client-driven projects. I find client-driven work to be intriguing.  It challenges my skills in production, design, professionalism, working with others, and my software and hardware knowledge base.  I enjoy designing for clients because it serves a different purpose and involves an interaction with the public that is different than fine art.

In contrast to my designer sensibilities, I regularly come back to my fine art roots to be able to create work that satisfies my need for more personal expression, and furthers my interests and research. My research explores fairy tales, childhood games and narrative-based work through the use of new media applications and current technology. I enjoy the challenge of taking timeless stories and presenting them in an of-the-moment context.  Through animation, video, and photography, I am able to create installations and internet work that pulls the viewer into an interactive story.

The definition of storyteller as it pertains to fairy tales is my artistic challenge.  I look to recreate narrative experiences, while maintaining the storyteller’s perspective.  The interactivity of a story is what piques my interest in this subject matter.  Although my medium is highly technical, the organic sensibilities of my images and the compelling narratives convey the human and natural elements so essential to the telling and retelling of these incredible stories.
